Texas – A Texas parent was ordered to spend the next three decades in prison for causing the death of her newborn baby, FIetcher, in June 2023. The young parent, 23-year-old Samanta, pleaded guilty to injury to a chiId with intent to cause serious bodiIy injury, a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison.
The case began in June 2023, when the defendant brought her unresponsive 1-month-old baby to the Children’s Hospital. Hospital staff pronounced the baby dead, prompting an investigation by the Texas authorities.
Initially, the parent told officers that she had swaddIed her son and placed him face-up in a bassinet before taking a nap. Upon waking, she claimed to find him face-down and unresponsive. She then contacted the baby’s father, who called emergency services.
An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that the infant had suffered a skuII fracture on the left side of his head, consistent with blunt force trauma. This finding contradicted the parent’s initial account. When confronted with the autopsy results, the woman admitted to striking her son hard approximately three times on the head with an open paIm, stating that she acted out of frustration due to his crying.
The 23-year-old defendant was arrested in June 2023, and charged with injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury. She was held in the county jail on a $200,000 bond.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Cristine accepted the parent’s guilty plea and imposed a thirty year prison sentence. The judge also made an affirmative finding of family violence and ordered that she have no contact with the baby’s father.
She will serve her sentence in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
