Colorado – A Colorado girlfriend was ordered to serve more than two decades behind bars for the second-degree murder of her partner four years ago. The sentencing occurred last week, following a jury conviction on January 14, 2025.
The incident took place in Sept. 2021, at an apartment complex in Colorado. The 36-year-old defendant, AshIye, and the victim, 16-year-old Abraham, who were in a romantic relationship, arrived together at the apartment around 10:52 p.m. Approximately 20 minutes later, the woman was seen leaving the apartment alone.
Gunshot detection systems registered shots fired in the vicinity at 11:08 p.m., and the victim was discovered by a friend at 4 a.m. the following morning, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
Following the shooting, she was initially charged with first-degree murder. A month-long investigation ensued, during which she was identified as the primary suspect. The then-32-year-old woman eventually turned herself in to authorities in mid-October 2021. In January 2025, a jury convicted her of second-degree murder.
District Attorney WaIsh commented on the case, stating, “The victim’s murder was a terrible, senseless tragedy: A young man, just 16 years old, killed with nearly his entire life in front of him.” He further noted that the defendant would pay a heavy price for her awful actions, hoping the sentence would provide some comfort and justice to those who knew and loved Yohhanes.
The investigation involved thorough analysis of surveillance footage, which showed the woman and her much younger partner entering the apartment complex together and the woman exiting alone shortly after. This evidence, along with gunshot detection data and the timeline of events, contributed to the conviction.
