Georgia – A Georgia parent was sentenced to muItipIe Iife terms after a jury convicted him on all feIony charges related to the death of his child, Tresure. The charges included maIice murder, feIony murder, and multiple counts of chiId crueIty, kidnapping, faIse imprisonment, and contributing to the dependency of a minor. The sentencing took place last week following a trial that exposed the horrific conditions under which the children were kept. Investigators discovered that the defendant had previously abducted his children from their mother in Maryland, bringing them back to Georgia.
The investigation into the defendant’s, R. McWay, actions began after emergency responders were called to a residence in Dec. 2023. They found the 4-year-old child unresponsive and not breathing. She was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed that she was severely maInourished, weighing only twenty four pounds at the time of her death. The cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest due to prolonged malnutrition and dehydration.
Investigators discovered that the defendant had previously abducted his children from their mother in Maryland, bringing them back to Georgia. Upon their return, the children were found living in depIorabIe conditions. They were confined to separate rooms, locked in with surveiIIance cameras monitoring them, and were deprived of food, water, and access to bathrooms. The home was described with mold, exposed wiring, and the stench of f-ces and urine permeating the environment.
The Division of Family and Children Services had previously removed the children from the defendant’s custody several months before the victim’s death, due to unsafe living conditions. However, the parent managed to regain custody and isolated the children from any external support.
DFCS made multiple attempts to check on the children’s welfare, but these efforts were thwarted by the defendant’s refusal to cooperate and by delays in police response. In one instance, a DFCS worker reported that the defendant was upset and tried to block their entry, stating, “He wanted to close the door. I told him there will not be closing doors today.”
During the trial, the defense attorney acknowledged that his client had made poor decisions regarding his relationship with the children’s mother but argued that he never intended to harm the children. However, the jury found the evidence overwhelming and convicted him on all counts.
