Prosecutors said the defendant, Ureka, was sentenced to life in a state correctional facility without the possibility of parole for throwing her two young children, 5-year-old and 10-month-old, off a bridge. The 10-month-old boy, Joshua, died and her 5-year-old son, Elijah, was severely injured. The 34-year-old mother was found guilty of murder and attempted murder.
District Judge Donald also ordered the mother to serve a sentence of 50 years for the attempted murder charge, with the sentences to be served simultaneously. Prosecutors said that during the trial the mother didn’t testify. On Sept. 24, 2021, the mother threw her two sons off the bridge. The 911 caller told the dispatcher that he reportedly saw an infant floating face down in the water.
The responding officers first found the 10-month-old baby, who was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water. Emergency Medical Services personnel tried resuscitating the baby, but, unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The 5-year-old boy was found floating on his back and was pulled from the water a short time later.
He was severely injured and was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Elijah reportedly told investigators that their mother threw them off the bridge. The boy also told investigators that his mom told him he had germs and that the water below the bridge was good water. She then threw him off the bridge. The mother reportedly told investigators that she threw her kids into the water so they could ‘meet with God’.
