Police officials said the young mom, later identified as 24-year-old Sara, was taken into custody and later charged with second-degree murder and child abuse after she left her 1-year-old child and 1-month-old baby girl unattended home alone for nearly 2 days before going to nightclub and taking drugs and drinking alcohol. The mother reportedly gave medicine for 6 years and older and melatonin to the infant.
The 1-month-old baby daughter died from Chlorpheniramine intoxication after the mother gave her cold and flu medicine for 6 years and older and left home unattended for nearly 2 days. Sara, who was arrested on Friday, reportedly told investigators that she woke up that morning and went briefly to the corner shop. When she came back and entered the child’s room, she reportedly found her daughter with a blanket over her face and not breathing.
She then called her parents, who called 911, Sara told investigators. First responders discovered that the baby’s temperature was much colder that the room temperature and realized that the baby was dead for some time. Surveillance footage, obtained by authorities, reportedly showed that the mother left her apartment Friday evening and returned Sunday morning.
Authorities also found a bottle of child’s cold and flu medicine for 6 years and older. During and interview with investigators, the mother reportedly admitted to leaving her both children unattended and home alone for nearly 2 days to go have a s-xual encounter and go to a nightclub. She also told authorities to giving her newborn baby a cold and flu medicine and melatonin prior to leaving them home alone. It is not clear what the condition of the 17-month-old was.
