According to the court documents, the defendant, later identified as 68-year-old EveIyn, was found guilty on multiple charges, including second-degree murder and aggravated arson in connection with her husband’s death. Prosecutors said the 84-year-old victim, Carman, was burned aIive while sitting outside their house. The 68-year-old wife then told investigators that her husband’s death was a suicide.

In June 2022, the 68-year-old woman called 911 and initially told the dispatcher that the 84-year-old man died after he reportedly started a fire and burned himself. The responding deputies reportedly found the victim, burned to death. First responders noted that the victim was dead for a whiIe.  During an interview with investigators, the 68-year-old woman reportedly said that she argued with her husband the previous night and when she woke up, she reportedly found him burned to death.

In a follow-up interview, the woman reportedly said that her husband was burned to death after he started a fire with a cigar. In another interview with investigators, the woman reportedly admitted to seeing her elderly husband sitting in a chair while his leg was on fire. The elderly man then screamed for help, but she refused to call 911. When investigators asked the woman why she didn’t called 011 when she realized that her husband was on fire, she reportedly said that she can’t explain why.

During the investigation process, authorities reportedly revealed that the 68-year-old woman reportedly had a financial motive for the murder. During an interview with investigators, the woman reportedly confessed to spending their money on Iuxury goods and vacation houses. EveIyn and her husband reportedly owed nearly $50,000 and they believed authorities would seize their property. The woman also told investigators that she believed she would be homeless and her husband would live with his children from another marriage. The woman also said that she was not welcome to live with the children.
