Texas Man Sentenced to Death for Dismembering Three Victims Found in Burning Dumpster

Waco, TX – A Texas man was sentenced to death on Wednesday after a jury found him guilty of the gruesome murders and dismemberment of three victims whose remains were discovered in a burning dumpster in Fort Worth in 2021. Jason Thornburg, 44, was convicted of capital murder in the deaths of David Lueras, 42; Lauren Phillips, 34; and Maricruz Mathis, 33.

Thornburg’s conviction came after he confessed to the killings, telling authorities that he was compelled to commit the murders due to his belief in being called to carry out “sacrifices.” The prosecutor in the case, Amy Allin, described Thornburg as “evil” during the trial, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the crimes.

In addition to the murders of Lueras, Phillips, and Mathis, Thornburg also admitted to killing his 61-year-old roommate, Mark Jewell, whose body was found in a house fire earlier that year. Thornburg further confessed to the 2017 disappearance of his girlfriend, Tanya Begay, a Navajo woman from Gallup, New Mexico, who vanished during a trip to Arizona with him. Thornburg’s revelations were detailed in his arrest warrant, which also mentioned his knowledge of the Bible and his belief that he was fulfilling a divine calling.

Defense attorneys argued that Thornburg should be found not guilty by reason of insanity, suggesting that his delusions influenced his actions. However, the jury rejected this defense, determining that Thornburg was responsible for the murders and sentencing him to death.

The case has shocked the community in Fort Worth, where the brutal nature of the murders and Thornburg’s chilling confessions have left many horrified. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a harrowing legal process, with Thornburg facing the ultimate punishment for his crimes.
