Man told police ‘he is tired of foreiigners, who are walking all over the place and making our money cost so much more than it should’ after he assauIted a random person at the store; charged

Missouri – A Missouri man is behind bars and charged with fourth-degree assault motivated by dscrimination following an incident at a grocery store in Missouri. The 31-year-old man, later identified as Shaun, is accused of attacking a male shopper at the end of last month.

The incident took place around 5:57 p.m. after the defendant allegedly confronted the victim and made derogatory remarks, telling him to ‘go back to his country’. When the victim, who was not identified, responded, asking if he had any prior issues with him, the defendant became aggressive, striking the victim after he stumbled and fell. A bystander intervened, but couldn’t stop the defendant from assaulting the victim. The 31-year-old man reportedly stopped the assault when he learned that the police had been called.

Upon his arrest, the defendant reportedly stated, “It was just me. I’m not saying anything else,” and later made multiple inflammatory comments, including expressing frustration with immigrants and their perceived impact on the economy. He was quoted as saying, “I’m tired of foreigners, man. Walking all over the place, making our money cost so much more than it should,” and also added, “I’m next going to China to take them down because they were part of the COVID vaccine, virus.”

The 31-year-old defendant is currently being held on a $40,000 cash-only bond and is set to appear in court next month. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The charges against him stem from a violation of Missouri’s statute on discriminatory assaults, and he faces potential legal consequences for the racially charged nature of the attack.

Community leaders have spoken out in response to the incident. lbrahim, of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, commented on the frequent occurrence of such racially motivated attacks, stating, “Unfortunately, we see these kinds of incidents almost every day nationwide. And that’s why we feel it’s our obligation to speak out.” He urged federal authorities to intervene in such cases, adding, “We’d like to see federal authorities also intervene to send the message that this kind of incident will not be tolerated.”

Jef from the Asian American Chamber of Commerce emphasized the importance of unity, saying, “We need to all come together to really, you know, change the narrative on St. Louis.”

Organizations like the Missouri Asian American Youth Foundation and OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates are offering support to those affected by such incidents, and the Crime Victim Center of St. Louis is providing assistance to crime victims.
