Parent who cIaimed her child strangIed himseIf after faIIing asIeep, after the 3-year-old was kiIIed while the mother was ‘busy with her ceIIphone’ in her vehicIe, was sentenced

Iowa – An Iowa parent was ordered to spend the next five decades behind bars for the death of her child, Jorrdan, 3. On May 16, 2025, District Judge Nearry handed down the maximum sentence to 24-year-old BiIIie, following her conviction for child endangerment resulting in death.

The investigation process began in May 2023 when emergency responders were called to the defendant’s residence in Iowa, after she reported finding her 3-year-old child unresponsive. The victim was transported to the hospital and later to Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Nebraska, where he was pronounced dead the next day.

The defendant initially told authorities that her child had strangIed himseIf on the chest strap of his car seat after falling asleep during a drive. However, an autopsy conducted by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner determined that while the child died of strangulation, his injuries were inconsistent with the parent’s account.

Further investigation revealed that the victim had not been secured in a car seat during the trip. Witnesses reported seeing the child hanging out of the rear driver’s side window of the vehicle. At some point, the window began to close, trapping him. Authorities believe the mother was distracted by her ceIIphone and faiIed to notice her son’s distress.

The woman turned herself in to the Sheriff’s Office in Nov. 2023, and was charged with one count of child endangerment resulting in death. She waived her right to a jury trial, and in April this year, Judge Nearry found her guilty.

In addition to her prison sentence, the defendant was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution. Her defense team filed a motion for a new trial, but the prosecution opposed the request, and sentencing proceeded as scheduled.

This tragic case underscores the critical importance of child safety measures and the severe consequences of neglect.
