Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz announced his endorsement of Alan Wilson for governor of South Carolina, praising the attorney general’s conservative record and leadership as the race for the Republican nomination enters a critical stage.
In a social media post published Friday, Cruz wrote, “I am proud to endorse Alan Wilson for Governor of South Carolina. Alan is a proven conservative fighter who has spent years defending the Constitution as South Carolina’s Attorney General, protecting families, reining in government overreach, and standing up to the radical policies of the Left. He has the courage, conviction, and leadership South Carolina needs, and I am confident he will be an outstanding Governor.”
The endorsement comes as Wilson seeks the Republican nomination to succeed Henry McMaster, who is term-limited. Wilson, a four-term attorney general, launched his gubernatorial campaign in 2025 and has built his campaign around public safety, conservative policies, government accountability, and reducing taxes, Reuters reported.
Wilson has served as South Carolina’s attorney general since first being elected in 2010. During his campaign for governor, he has highlighted his experience as the state’s top prosecutor and his efforts to defend conservative priorities through legal challenges and law enforcement initiatives. He has also proposed eliminating the state income tax, reducing government spending, and expanding school choice programs.
The endorsement from Cruz adds to a growing list of support for Wilson from Republican leaders and law enforcement officials. Earlier this year, Wilson’s campaign announced endorsements from multiple Republican attorneys general and South Carolina solicitors, while former South Carolina Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant also publicly backed his bid for governor.
The South Carolina governor’s race has attracted significant national attention, with several high-profile Republicans competing to lead a state that remains a Republican stronghold. The contest has also become a closely watched test of influence among prominent conservative figures and factions within the Republican Party, according to AP.
Wilson recently advanced to a Republican gubernatorial runoff against South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette after neither candidate secured a majority of the vote in the primary election. The runoff is scheduled for June 23 and will determine the Republican nominee for governor. Political observers widely view the Republican nominee as the favorite in the general election given the state’s recent voting history, Reuters reported.
Cruz’s endorsement arrives less than two weeks before the runoff, giving Wilson another high-profile supporter as he seeks to consolidate conservative voters ahead of the decisive Republican contest.
