Texas Governor Abbott reacts to Talarico’s controversial Christianity comments, says his Texas win is “not gonna happen”

Governor Greg Abbott congratulates Port Aransas for earning Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation

Texas – Governor Greg Abbott is criticizing Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico after a resurfaced interview sparked controversy over comments Talarico made about Christianity and his faith.

“Talarico says he hates Christianity. He also says he’s going to win Texas. Not gonna happen. PERIOD,” Abbott said in a post on social media.

The comments came after a resurfaced 2021 episode of the “Activist Theology” podcast in which Talarico described himself as “a Christian who hates Christianity.” The interview has drawn attention during his 2026 Senate campaign against Republican Ken Paxton.

During the interview, Talarico said, “I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity,” while discussing his views on faith, politics, and the role of religion in society. He also said he was repeatedly drawn back to Christianity because he viewed the teachings of Jesus as deeply transformative and “radical” in a moral and social sense, FOX News reported.

The comments have become a major point of criticism from Republican leaders and conservative groups, who argue the remarks show a disconnect between Talarico’s views and traditional Christian beliefs. Abbott’s post framed the controversy as part of the broader fight over the future of Texas politics as Talarico campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat.

Talarico’s campaign has pushed back against the criticism, arguing that the comments have been taken out of context. His campaign said he is a Christian who has dedicated himself to studying and discussing the teachings of Jesus, and that his criticism is directed at the way Christianity can be used for political purposes rather than the faith itself.

The controversy is part of a larger debate surrounding Talarico’s approach to religion. The Democratic candidate has frequently highlighted his Christian faith during his political career and has described his beliefs as influencing his views on issues such as compassion, service, and helping others.

However, several of his past comments have drawn criticism from Republican opponents, including remarks about theology and religion that critics argue challenge traditional interpretations of Christianity. Supporters of Talarico say his views represent a different interpretation of faith and argue that his religious beliefs should not be judged solely through viral clips.

The issue has intensified as the Texas Senate race continues to gain national attention. Talarico is running as the Democratic nominee, while Paxton, the Republican candidate, has used the controversy and previous remarks from Talarico as part of broader criticism of his political views.

Abbott’s response reflects the growing divide over religion, politics, and identity in Texas, where candidates from both parties are seeking support from voters with different views on faith and public life.

As the race continues, the debate over Talarico’s comments is expected to remain a major issue in the campaign.
