Drunk Driver Crashes into Tree, Fleeing Scene After Passenger is Trapped in Wreckage

Waco, TX – A man is facing serious charges after crashing his Chevrolet Tahoe into an oak tree on November 30, leaving his girlfriend trapped inside the wrecked vehicle before fleeing the scene. The accident occurred at the intersection of 17th Street and Homan Avenue.

Police responded to the scene and found the woman pinned in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, with the front dashboard collapsed, trapping her legs. Firefighters from two engines and emergency medical teams worked together to extricate her from the wreckage, which took considerable effort. According to authorities, the woman sustained a broken toe and significant bruising in the crash.

Witnesses and other passengers in the Tahoe confirmed that the driver, later identified as 26-year-old Dalyn Diaz, fled the scene shortly after the crash. Diaz’s girlfriend was found to be the passenger in the front seat. Diaz’s relatives later located him near the scene and escorted him back to the wreckage site.

When questioned by officers, Diaz explained that he ran from the scene because he was scared, having consumed several alcoholic beverages prior to the crash. According to the arrest warrant, Diaz admitted to drinking four shots before the collision. Officers observed that Diaz had slurred speech and was stumbling, showing signs of intoxication.

Diaz was arrested and charged with intoxication assault resulting in serious bodily injury and failure to stop and render aid. A blood sample was taken from Diaz to determine his blood alcohol content, though the results have not yet been released.

Diaz was released from McLennan County Jail after posting a $15,000 bond. His girlfriend, whose identity has not been released, is recovering from her injuries. The investigation into the crash continues.
