HEWITT, Texas – A fiery multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 35 early Tuesday morning resulted in the death of 39-year-old Jennifer James of Lorena. The accident, involving three semi-trucks and six passenger vehicles, occurred around 6:00 a.m. on January 15 near mile marker 326 in Hewitt.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash was triggered when a truck tractor-semi trailer failed to control its speed as traffic slowed due to a road crew working on the highway. The semi collided with several vehicles, creating a devastating chain reaction.
James was pronounced dead at the scene, while six other individuals involved in the crash were transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Waco for treatment. The identities and conditions of the other victims have not yet been released.
The fiery wreck caused significant traffic delays throughout the morning, with I-35 remaining closed for several hours. The highway reopened by approximately 5:00 p.m. that day.
Family and friends of Jennifer James are mourning her loss. A family friend confirmed that James had previously experienced the heartbreaking loss of her husband, Vinnie James, who died in a car accident in May of 2023.
The Lorena Independent School District (ISD), where Jennifer James was known to be connected, expressed its sorrow following the tragedy. In a statement, the district said, “Lorena ISD offers our sincere condolences to the family of Jennifer James. The district is committed to providing support to our students, staff, and community. Our thoughts and prayers are with James’ family, as well as the other victims of today’s accident and their families.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, and DPS has urged drivers to exercise caution on the roadways, especially in construction zones.
