Texas – On May 1, 2025, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 2, a significant school choice program, into law at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin. This bill marks the largest day-one launch of a school choice program in the country, allowing Texas families the freedom to choose the educational pathway best suited for their children.
The signing ceremony was attended by hundreds of Texas parents, students, educators, and school choice advocates, all celebrating this historic moment in Texas education.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of this bill, stating, “When I ran for re-election in 2022, I promised Texans that we would bring education freedom to every Texas family.
Texas delivers on that promise.” He continued, highlighting the impact of the law, which gives families the ability to move their children out of public schools that are no longer serving their needs and to select the school they feel is right for their child.
The Governor expressed gratitude to key figures involved in the successful passage of the bill, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dustin Burrows, and Chairmen Brandon Creighton and Brad Buckley. He also acknowledged the efforts of school choice advocates across Texas who tirelessly worked to bring this legislation to fruition.
At the signing event, the Governor was joined by U.S. Senator John Cornyn, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dustin Burrows, Chairmen Brandon Creighton and Brad Buckley, Kingdom Life Academy Director Joel Enge, and school choice advocate Shinara Morrison. They were surrounded by numerous state and local officials, school choice supporters, and families who celebrated the long-awaited victory.
The passage of Senate Bill 2 marks a new era for Texas families, providing them with the option to choose the educational opportunities that best fit the needs of their children, furthering the state’s commitment to empowering parents in shaping their children’s futures.
