Waco, TX – The Legacy Artwork Project, a year-long creative effort, has officially been installed at G.W. Carver Middle School. The project, which celebrates the life and legacy of the school’s namesake, George Washington Carver, features a series of hand-forged metal sculptures that have now been placed at the school’s entryway.
Artist Skip Lee Ralls, who has dedicated over four decades to the craft of sculpture, led the project. Ralls and his team began transporting the intricate sculptures to the school on Monday, marking a milestone in a process that has been both personal and meaningful for the artist. “I have a mural of Carver in the studio and every morning I say to Carver, ‘Good morning,’” Ralls shared. “And during the days that are very frustrating, which you have when you do this work, it’s just this mantra, ‘It’s not about me, it’s about Carver.’”
Ralls, who has spent 42 years honing his skills as a sculptor, explained that this particular project has been one of the most fulfilling of his career. “If I could be half the man Professor Carver was, I’ve succeeded,” he said, reflecting on the inspiration he draws from the renowned scientist and educator.
The artwork is not only a tribute to Carver’s enduring influence but also a reflection of the history and values of the school itself. The sculptures incorporate symbols that represent Carver’s work, including peanuts, roses, and musical instruments entwined with vines. These elements are designed to both honor the legacy of Carver and connect students to their school’s rich history.
The Cooper Foundation provided essential funding for the project, making it possible for Ralls to bring his vision to life. “This project is about more than just artwork,” Ralls said. “If we can touch one problematic child and slow them down, give them something to reflect on, perhaps it will impact them in a positive way. Something more than their current situation.”
Once students and staff return from the holiday break, they will have the opportunity to engage with the artwork and reflect on its meaning. The Legacy Artwork Project is expected to become a significant part of the school’s environment, offering inspiration and a deeper connection to the values George Washington Carver embodied.
For Ralls, this project has become much more than just a commission. It’s a chance to honor Carver’s profound impact on education, science, and culture. “This is one of my favorite pieces,” Ralls concluded, underscoring the personal and professional significance the project holds for him.
The Legacy Artwork Project is a lasting tribute to Carver’s legacy and promises to be a point of pride for G.W. Carver Middle School for years to come.
