Waco, TX – A man is facing multiple felony charges after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle that ended with a crash into a front yard in Bell County. The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. on December 18 near Comay Circle, close to the service road of Interstate 35.
Authorities identified the man as 30-year-old Chance Quinn Oglesby, who is now facing charges including two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle, burglary of vehicles, burglary of a building, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and evading arrest/detention.
The sequence of events began when local law enforcement, including Bell County Constable Precinct 3 and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers, responded to a report involving a stolen vehicle from Hamilton County. The stolen vehicle was located in the parking lot of a Walmart. Upon spotting police, Oglesby attempted to flee the scene, sparking a brief pursuit.
As Oglesby fled, the chase escalated, leading him down local streets before crashing into the front yard of a nearby residence. The crash caused damage to the property, notably to an inflatable snowman decoration on the lawn of Ailehs Gaines, the homeowner.
Gaines, who was home with her daughter at the time of the incident, recounted the surprise and shock of witnessing the chaotic scene unfold. “This morning, my daughter—she’s a senior in high school—was getting ready for school. She walked to the front door, opened it, and then started screaming as we heard sirens outside,” Gaines said. “We never expected to see something like this in our front yard.”
The high-speed chase, though brief, caused a significant disturbance to the quiet residential area. Law enforcement officers quickly apprehended Oglesby after the crash, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
In addition to the stolen vehicle, authorities are investigating the burglary charges, as it appears Oglesby was involved in other theft-related activities in the area, including vehicle burglaries and possibly breaking into a building.
Oglesby remains in custody as authorities continue their investigation into the full extent of his alleged criminal activities. The case serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of such high-risk police pursuits and the potential for innocent bystanders to be caught in the middle.
The damaged inflatable snowman was a minor casualty in what could have been a much more dangerous situation. For Gaines and her daughter, however, it was a morning they won’t soon forget. “It was just one of those things you never think will happen to you,” Gaines said.
