Texas – A Texas man faces aggravated assauIt charge after allegedly assaulting his famiIy member with a tooI. The 24‑year‑old defendant, later identified as R. Babon, was arrested and charged with aggravated assauIt with a deadIy weapon following a vioIent incident at his famiIy home last week, Texas authorities confirmed. Sheriff GonzaIez announced that if convicted, the defendant could face up to twenty years in prison.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted to the situation after a friend of the defendant’s received alarming messages sent by him. Those messages, which were sent two hours prior to law enforcement’s arrival, detailed the defendant’s attack on his 61‑year‑old family member. “I just assaulted my mom, I got angry… I hit her a few times on the head and the side. She’s barely breathing,” he allegedly confessed in the message.

The friend, after finding the messages, promptly contacted the Sheriff’s Office around 6 p.m. Deputies arrived at the residence and discovered the mother severely injured, bIeeding from her head, and unresponsive in the backyard. Due to the severity of her condition, she was airlifted to a hospital and remained in serious condition, unable to communicate with first responders.

The defendant was not at the home upon the deputies’ arrival. When he returned, he reportedly told responding officers that his parent had been napping when he left to run errands and expressed confusion about the police presence. He repeatedly claimed ignorance about what had occurred, a statement that conflicted with the content of the messages he had sent to his friend.

Court documentation indicates that the assauIt was premeditated, involving the defendant wielding a heavy tooI against his mother. The incident is officially categorized as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony under Texas law.

Following his return to the residence, deputies took him into custody and transported him to the county jail. Bond was set at $150,000 by a hearing officer, who sided with prosecutors after a court-appointed lawyer advocated for a reduced $30,000 bond. The defense highlighted Babin’s clean criminal record and described him as a “high-functioning person with autism”.

As of now, the defendant remains in custody, and his case is pending further judicial proceedings. Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motive for the attack and the defendant’s mental state at the time. Texas authorities have not yet released details on the nature of the relationship between the defendant and his mother, nor any prior warning signs.

Sheriff GonzaIez reiterated the seriousness of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges and stressed that the community must remain vigilant. “When someone uses a weapon in a domestic setting, the consequences are severe, and our department will thoroughly investigate to ensure justice is served,” he stated.

The victim continues to receive medical care at a hospital. No official updates have been provided regarding her current condition or potential recovery timeline.
