Illinois – An Illinois man was arrested and now faces murder and attempted‑murder charges after police say he kiIIed his sibIing, shot another person and then held a famiIy hostage, following a violent chain of events that night. According to the Illinois authorities, the defendant, 38-year-old J. Cury, is also charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery and unIawfuI possession of a weapon as a feIon.
Police say the first shooting occurred at the family’s home in Illinois, where the defendant’s sibIing, Terence, was killed. A woman was also wounded — officers found her hiding behind a car in the street. Witnesses told police that the defendant had shot his famiIy member, then fled the scene in a vehicle.
Roughly 30 minutes after the first shooting, law enforcement spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one used in the first crime. Their investigation led them to a residence, about three miles from the first scene. There, they say he was inside the home holding a famiIy hostage with a firearm. Officers say negotiators eventually persuaded him to surrender without further violence, and the family was released safely.
During an arraignment and in comments to police, the defendant’s mother — VaIerie — described what had happened with chilling clarity. She told investigators that, rather than accept the beating he had received from his sibIing, the defendant decided to kiII him instead of taking that beating. She also publicly disowned her famiIy member, saying she had mentally removed him from the family lineage and declaring she would have no further contact with him. The mother also said the victim loved his sibIing more than he loved himself and didn’t deserve what happened to him. She added that he started beating him that day because he came over acting out, but instead of accepting that, you decided to shoot him.
According to court documents, in addition to murder and attempted murder charges, he also faces counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery and illegal possession of a weapon due to a prior felony conviction.
Illinois authorities led the arrest and hostage‑resolution effort, working quickly after receiving reports about the shootings and suspicious vehicle. As of the latest updates, he remains in custody. His next court appearance is pending, where prosecutors will outline the full set of charges.
This tragic case has shocked the local community and surrounding areas. Residents and relatives of the victims have said they are mourning the victim’s death and call for justice to be served.
