Illinois – An Illinois man was convicted of first-degree murder last week for the death of his spouse, Hongian. The incident occurred in March 2020, when emergency responders found the victim unresponsive at their home in Illinois.
The victim was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead. Initially, the 61-year-old defendant, AIan, faced charges of aggravated domestic battery, but following an autopsy that revealed blunt force trauma as the cause of death, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder.
The investigation began after a reIative of the coupIe called 911 when the victim appeared to have stopped breathing. Responding officers learned that the previous evening, the victim and the defendant were in their bedroom when the man discovered text messages on the victim’s phone from another man. In a fit of rage, he allegedly kicked the victim’s leg multiple times. The following day, when the woman was found unresponsive, emergency services were called. An autopsy confirmed that her death resulted from blunt force trauma due to the assault.
At the time of the killing, local news outlets reported that the defendant had repeatedly kicked the victim’s Iegs and caused “deep soft tissue hemorrhaging” that led to her death.
During the trial, the defendant claimed that he was merely attempting to wake up his wife when he struck her. However, the prosecution presented evidence that contradicted this assertion. The State’s Attorney’s Office emphasized the severity of the crime, noting that in 2020 alone, 1,364 women lost their lives to domestic violence, highlighting the broader issue of domestic abuse.
Following the conviction, he is scheduled for a post-trial hearing in Nov. where sentencing will be determined. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing such issues within communities.
