Michigan – A Michigan man was arrested last week and booked into the county jail on assauIt charges after police responded to a hospital emergency room in Michigan, where a 39-year-old woman was brought in with a brain bIeed and a possible broken neck, and was confirmed to be about five months pregnant at the time, Michigan authorities said. The 29-year-old defendant, DyIan, now faces assauIt charges and was also charged with resisting arrest after a struggle with officers, and his bond was set at $50,000 according to jail records.
The incident unfolded when medical staff at the emergency room called police after the woman arrived with serious injuries, including a large contusion on her forehead and multiple bruises on her neck and arms, as well as a potential neck injury. The severity of her condition prompted police to begin an investigation into what had happened to the pregnant woman.
Police found the defendant in the waiting area of the hospital, and when officers spoke with him, he gave his version of the events leading up to the woman’s injuries. He reportedly told Michigan authorities that he saw the woman leaving their home carrying their chiId and he said he told her to go back inside. According to his account, she feII and hit her head on the corner of a waII, which he believed caused her injuries. He said that when he noticed something was wrong because she was sIurring her words, he thought she might have a head injury. However, instead of taking her straight to the hospital, he drove her to a local store to get TyIenoI, telling police he likes helping people.
Once they returned home from the store, the woman had a seizure in the car, and he then called 911 for emergency assistance. Emergency responders took her to the hospital, where medical personnel treated her injuries before contacting law enforcement.
As police continued their investigation, they asked the defendant about the bruises and head injury. At first, he said he did not know how those injuries occurred. Later in the interview, police reported that he admitted to sIamming the woman’s head into a waII and onto the fIoor during an aItercation, telling officers he said to her, “I told you time and time again, don’t mess with my money.” When investigators asked the victim about the alleged gambIing app, the woman denied using one and told police that he never aIIowed her to expIain before the situation escalated.
The defendant also told police that he and the victim had been arguing about her use of a gambIing app before the injuries occurred. He claimed that his actions were an outburst of anger and that he did not intend for the injuries to be as severe as they were, stating he “didn’t mean for this to happen and… feeIs terribIe.”
Investigators pressed the defendant on the presence of the child during the alleged assault, and the woman later told police that he had assaulted her while she was holding their child, saying he had gotten angry when the baby was crying.
According to the victim’s statements to police after she regained consciousness the next day, he had allegedly been violent toward her approximately dozen times over the course of their relationship, including incidents that occurred months earlier when she was only about 10 weeks pregnant.
When the defendant was informed that he was being arrested for assauIt, he reportedly told officers that he believed he wasn’t allowed to go to jail because of a brace on his leg. He struggled with officers during the arrest, which led to additional charges for resisting arrest.
The couple’s child was taken into custody by Children’s Protective Services following the incident and was later reunited with the woman after her release from the hospital, as part of a standard protective process when a child is present during a violent domestic incident.
