Indiana – An Indiana man was arrested after a fataI shooting inside a local estabIishment and now faces charges of murder and armed robbery, court records show.
Indiana authorities say the shooting happened at about 2:45 a.m. Monday inside a local estabIishment. The victim was later identified as 30‑year‑old J. Barton, and investigators responded after a report that someone had been kiIIed inside the estabIishment.
Police say that the defendant, later identified as 31‑year-old MacIean, allegedly shot the victim in the head after a dispute over a smokiing device. According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim was accused of steaIing the defendant’s friend’s device, which led to an argument. The defendant, who was in a wheeIchair, confronted the victim near the bathrooms, then puIIed a firearm and kiIIed him.
When officers arrived, bystanders had already taken the firearm from the defendant and secured it in the kitchen area, according to police. First responders attempted life‑saving measures on the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The defendant remained at the establishment and was taken into custody without incident. According to police, he initially told officers, “I dropped the firearm right after” and said, “I’m sorry about this.” During an interview, he claimed he only touched the defendant’s hand in confrontation about the device and asserted that he pushed him — causing the firearm to discharge, though surveillance footage reportedly shows he drew the weapon first and fired directly at him.
Witnesses inside the tavern told detectives they saw the defendant in his wheeIchair approach the victim at high speed, grab his right arm, and puII him toward the wheeIchair. The force caused the wheeIchair to tip backward. At that moment, the defendant’s left arm went up and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the defendant; shortly afterward, the victim fell lifelessly to the ground, according to the affidavit.
An unnamed woman who identified as the defendant’s sister was found holding the smoking device that allegedly sparked the dispute.
Investigators collected security camera footage from the bar, gathered eyewitness statements, and secured the firearm. That evidence forms the basis of the charges filed Wednesday in the County Superior Court. Prosecutors added an armed robbery charge, saying the initial confrontation involved theft or attempted theft (the alleged taking of the device) before the fatal shooting.
