Ohio – An Ohio man was sentenced last week for his role in the death of his baby, Braston. The defendant pleaded guilty to felony charges of permitting child abuse and was sentenced from eleven to sixteen and a half years behind bars.
Initially, both the father and the child’s mom, 25-year-old Landon and 21-year-old AngeI, faced severe charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and child endangerment. However, following plea negotiations, they both pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of permitting child abuse. This plea deal resulted in reduced sentences, with the father sentenced between eleven and sixteen and a half years. The victim’s mom will be sentenced at a later date.
County Judge Douglas said during the sentencing: “Really the only thing this child experienced in this world was pain and suffering. I cannot in good conscience show you any mercy or any leniency when your son didn’t get any of that. This child was abused continuously over the months before his death.”
In December 2023, emergency responders were called to the family’s residence in Ohio following reports of an ill infant. Upon arrival, authorities found the baby unresponsive and rushed him to the Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A subsequent investigation by the Sheriff’s Office uncovered evidence of months of continuous abuse inflicted upon the baby by both parents.
During the investigation, both parents provided statements regarding their involvement in the abuse. The father expressed remorse, referring to his child as a ‘miracle baby’ and stating he never intended to harm him. The mother admitted to noticing bruises on the baby but failed to seek medical attention or intervene, further complicating the investigation.
The County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the victim, determining that his death resulted from blunt-force trauma to the head. The examination also revealed multiple fractures in both legs and broken ribs. These injuries, inflicted over time, were consistent with severe physical abuse and led to the child’s untimely death.
The tragic death of the baby has left a profound impact on the local community. Local child advocacy groups have intensified efforts to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and intervention. The case serves as a stark reminder of the need to protect vulnerable children and prevent such tragedies.
