Mother Charged with Capital Murder in Death of 6-Week-Old Son

Waco, TX — Jacqueline Mendoza-Ramirez, a 21-year-old mother from Austin, has been charged with capital murder following the death of her 6-week-old son. The infant, who was found unresponsive at the family’s home, was later pronounced dead at Dell Children’s Medical Center on November 27.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a call from the hospital after the child’s parents brought the infant in, claiming he was not breathing. Despite efforts by medical staff to perform life-saving procedures, the child was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Initial investigations by authorities revealed that the baby had multiple signs of traumatic injuries on his body. The discovery prompted a deeper investigation, with Child Protective Services (CPS) notified and involved from the outset. Both parents were interviewed by authorities, and further evidence led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Mendoza-Ramirez on December 18.

The young mother was arrested later that same day. The charge of capital murder is the most severe available in Texas, and if convicted, Mendoza-Ramirez could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Austin Police have asked anyone with information regarding the case to come forward. Those with tips are urged to contact the Austin Police Department’s homicide unit at 512-974-8477.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not released further details about the circumstances leading to the child’s death. The identity of the father and the status of any potential charges against him have not been disclosed.

The death of a young child is a deeply tragic event, and the community remains shaken by the news. As the investigation continues, questions surrounding the cause of the injuries and the circumstances leading to the child’s death are expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
