Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller commented on a recently reported human case of travel-related New World Screwworm (NWS) in Maryland, emphasizing the need for a measured response.
“The spread of screwworm has not reached the United States, and this isolated event highlights the risk to travelers returning from regions where cases are active,” Miller said.
He noted that while screwworms are primarily known for causing severe damage to livestock and wildlife, they can also pose a threat to human health, although such cases are rare.
Miller stated that farmers and ranchers across the country have been urging swift action, and he is working with U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to strengthen national defenses.
The Texas Department of Agriculture’s Swormlure, a state-of-the-art attractant combined with pesticide bait, will provide an immediate safeguard against the pest, he said.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of preparedness and proactive measures to protect both agriculture and public health.
