Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller released a statement Tuesday applauding former President Donald J. Trump following the announcement of a new trade agreement with China that aims to reduce tariffs, curb retaliatory measures, and expand opportunities for American exports.
“I commend President Donald J. Trump for unveiling the agreement with China aimed at reducing tariffs, eliminating retaliation, sustaining a baseline tariff on China, and laying the groundwork for future discussions to enhance market access for American exports,” Miller said.
As part of the deal, both the United States and China will reduce tariffs by 115%, while maintaining an additional 10% tariff. Other trade measures by the U.S. will remain unchanged, according to Miller’s statement.
Miller described the agreement as a “critical step” in addressing long-standing trade imbalances and ensuring a fairer playing field for American producers. He highlighted that the U.S. recorded a \$295.4 billion trade deficit with China in 2024, the largest of any trading partner, underscoring the significance of the newly announced deal.
“The announcement of a new tariff agreement between the United States and China represents an important victory for America, especially for our farmers, ranchers, and rural communities,” Miller said. “After years of enduring unfair trade practices and retaliatory tariffs, the U.S. is finally reclaiming fairness in our global trade relationships.”
The Commissioner emphasized that the agreement will bring tangible benefits to American agriculture and rural economies, stating that Trump’s efforts reaffirm his commitment to protecting American industries.
“Once again, President Donald J. Trump fulfilled his promise to protect American workers and confront foreign competitors directly,” he added. “For American agriculture, this agreement demonstrates that trust in the Trump Administration was well placed and will be richly rewarded. Bold action produces bold results.”
Miller, a longtime supporter of Trump’s agricultural policies, has frequently aligned with the former president on trade and rural economic issues.
