Waco, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety has become the first law enforcement agency in the nation to deploy Airborne Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems on helicopters. The technology is designed to detect and respond to drones that may pose threats to public safety or emergency operations.
Installed on one DPS helicopter and fully operational since August, ACUS enhances the department’s ability to protect personnel and the public during high-risk missions, including disaster response, border operations, and criminal patrol flights.
DPS Tactical Flight Officers received specialized training to operate the system and monitor real-time data during flights.
The system provides airborne drone detection and alerts pilots and dispatch teams to potential threats, including the precise geolocation of drones and their operators. ACUS is strictly for detection and situational awareness, helping pilots maintain safety and awareness in the skies.
DPS officials said the integration of this technology represents a major advancement in aerial safety, protecting aircrews, first responders, and the communities they serve.
