Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced that students who qualify for reduced-price meals will now receive school breakfasts and lunches at no cost to their families.
The change follows action by the 89th Texas Legislature, which extended funding for reduced-price breakfasts and allocated additional funds to cover reduced-price lunches beginning Sept. 1, 2025. Funding will remain in place through the 2026-2027 school year.
Miller praised the legislature for removing barriers to access, noting that free and reduced-price school meals will help more children receive nutritious food that supports academic success. Schools are currently accepting household applications for meal eligibility, and families are encouraged to apply.
Parents and guardians can request applications online, at school offices, or in cafeterias, with only one application needed per household. Schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision, which already provides free meals to all students, will not require applications.
The Texas Department of Agriculture administers the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs in the state. Parents can also contact their school’s nutrition department for more information about meal options for the 2025-2026 school year.
