Texas – A Texas woman was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon during a roadside confrontation, according to officials with the HCSO. The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. April 1 on RR Lane in Haris County, Texas authorities said.
Deputies were initially dispatched to the area on an unrelated call from the same woman earlier in the day. She had reported finding a bullet on or near her vehicle outside her home and said she wanted to file a police report, according to Sheriff Gonzalez. That original call was classified as a generic “teroristic threat” report.
While a deputy was en route to that initial report, new calls came in about shots being fired in the neighborhood. When the deputy arrived at the scene of the shooting, he found the woman collapsed and unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, per reports.
Preliminary information from the sheriff’s office indicates that the fatal altercation began as what deputies described as a confrontation between the woman and a man who was driving a vehicle towing a small work trailer. According to Sheriff Gonzalez, the man had pulled over to allow the woman’s car to pass. The two then engaged in an exchange of words.
“She exits out of the vehicle, appears to be irate or upset, starts having words with him, and there’s just an exchange,” Gonzalez said at a press briefing. He added that the man said he was trying to de‑escalate the situation and that they did not know each other.
At some point during the confrontation, authorities say the woman allegedly retrieved a pistol from her vehicle. The man also drew a firearm, and he fired one or more shots, striking the woman. The exact number of shots fired has not been confirmed, and investigators have not yet determined a motive. The man remained at the scene following the shooting, called 911 himself, and is cooperating with law enforcement.
Two young children, an 8‑year‑old girl and a 4‑year‑old boy, were in the woman’s vehicle at the time of the shooting along with a family dog. Neither child was physically injured, but both reportedly witnessed the incident and were visibly upset, authorities said. Neighbors and deputies at the scene helped care for the children after the shooting.
Law enforcement has said there is no known connection between the woman and the man involved, and it is unclear what triggered the verbal confrontation that preceded the shooting. Investigators from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office homicide division and crime scene units continue to process evidence and interview witnesses. At this stage, no charges have been filed, and authorities have not released the identity of the victim or the man involved.
The location of the shooting prompted a brief safety response from nearby schools, with Cy‑Fair ISD officials confirming that Duryea Elementary School was placed in secure mode as a precaution before being cleared once the scene was secured. Officials have urged anyone with additional information to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation continues.
