The Waco Animal Shelter shares tips for keeping your pets safe this 4th of July

The Waco Animal Shelter will waive reclaim fees for pets in Waco city limits through January 6th, officials say

As you prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, don’t forget that the festivities can be challenging for your pets due to the loud noises, bright lights, and unfamiliar smells. The number of stray animals typically increases significantly around this holiday, and our Animal Shelter is already at full capacity. To help ensure your pets have a safe and happy Fourth of July, please review and follow these important safety tips:

  1. Extended Celebrations: Be alert before and after the holiday, as celebrations often happen over several days.
  2. Secure Your Pets: Fireworks and loud noises can cause pets to panic. Dogs may run away and cats may hide, so keep them secure indoors.
  3. Check Your Home: Inspect your home for any loose fencing or potential escape routes to prevent pets from getting out.
  4. Identification: Ensure your pets have a collar, tag, and updated microchip information in case they do get lost.
  5. Beat the Heat: Keep your pets cool by bringing them inside if possible to avoid the summer heat.
  6. Firework Debris: Pick up any firework debris around your home. Leftover pieces from explosives can be hazardous if ingested by pets.

Remember, fireworks are illegal within Waco city limits. Property damage from fireworks can result in a fine of up to $2,000 and/or jail time.
