WACO, TX – A 35-year-old man is facing felony charges of deadly conduct after allegedly firing a handgun at an occupied apartment complex in Waco. James Clayton Cantrell was arrested on Wednesday following a swift response by law enforcement.
According to the arrest affidavit, police were called to the University Club Apartments, located on the 1700 block of North Martin Luther King Boulevard, after a report of a man firing shots at the building. The suspect was said to have fled the scene in a maroon Dodge Charger.
While responding to the call, one officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s car traveling north on Gholson Road. The officer conducted a traffic stop, later identifying the driver as Cantrell.
Witnesses at the scene of the shooting reported seeing a man exit the maroon Charger and argue with another individual standing on the apartment building’s staircase. One witness told police they saw the suspect pull out a silver handgun and fire at the building. Another witness corroborated the story.
After making the traffic stop, officers brought one of the witnesses to the location, where the witness confirmed that Cantrell was the man seen in the altercation. A .380 shell casing was recovered from the area where the Charger had been parked, further linking Cantrell to the incident.
Cantrell was booked into the McLennan County Jail on Wednesday and is being held on a $10,000 bond. He faces felony charges of deadly conduct in connection with the shooting.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
