WACO, Texas – A 35-year-old man was arrested on February 1 following a lengthy standoff with the Waco Police Department’s SWAT team. The man, identified as Randall Shaeffer, faces multiple charges including Aggravated Family Violence Assault by Strangulation, Injury to a Child, and Resisting Arrest.
The incident began around 6:30 p.m. when officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence in the 1300 block of Chapel Creek Road. According to police, the initial report indicated a physical altercation between Shaeffer and his son. The son left the home after the altercation, informed his mother about the incident, and she subsequently contacted law enforcement.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers attempted to make contact with Shaeffer, but he refused to come out of the house. Authorities say that during this time, Shaeffer threatened officers, prompting them to establish a perimeter around the property.
In response to the escalating situation, the Waco Police Department called in their SWAT team and crisis negotiators to attempt to resolve the standoff peacefully. After several hours, Shaeffer was safely taken into custody.
No further details have been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
This standoff serves as a reminder of the challenging situations law enforcement can face when responding to domestic disturbances, and the crucial role of specialized teams in ensuring public safety during tense standoffs.
