Waco police assistant chief retires after 32 years of service

Waco, TX – Assistant Chief Robert Lanning of the Waco Police Department retired after 32 years of service, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and community impact. Lanning was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2008 and has served in a variety of roles throughout his career, including patrol, criminal investigations, SWAT, and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

He also contributed to officer development as a field training instructor and as an instructor of patrol tactics at the Waco Police Academy. Beyond his law enforcement work, Lanning was actively involved in community organizations, his church, and served as an adjunct faculty member at both Tarleton State University and Baylor University.

The City of Waco recognized Lanning’s contributions to public safety, community partnerships, and officer development by proclaiming January 29 as Assistant Chief Robert Lanning Day. Department officials praised his dedication, professionalism, and leadership throughout his distinguished career.
