An officer-involved shooting occurred on Monday afternoon near the 1800 Block of N. Valley Mills Drive, leading to a brief police pursuit and the arrest of a suspect, authorities report.
According to the Waco Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding a suspicious vehicle around 1:00 p.m. As law enforcement officers approached the vehicle, the driver of the car allegedly drove toward them, prompting one officer to discharge a round from their duty-issued firearm. Fortunately, the shot did not strike anyone, and the vehicle fled the scene.
A pursuit ensued as the suspect, later identified as Jarvis Richardson, began driving recklessly. However, the pursuit was quickly terminated due to safety concerns over the driver’s erratic behavior on the road.
Authorities later learned that Richardson’s vehicle had crashed at the intersection of N. Valley Mills and Lake Air Drive. Officers responded to the crash site and took the suspect into custody without further incident.
Richardson, 34, was charged with evading arrest and failure to stop and render aid. No major injuries were reported from the incident, including to law enforcement officers or the suspect.
The Waco Police Department has not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the suspect’s actions, and the officer involved in the shooting is placed on administrative leave as per standard protocol for officer-involved incidents.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
