According to the police officials, the wife, later identified as 71-year-old Bertha, was taken into custody and later charged with attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated battery against an elderly person and tampering with a witness or victim. Police officials said the elderly woman tried to kill her husband after he received a note from his ex-girlfriend.
According to the police officials, that was his ex-girlfriend from 60 years ago. After receiving the note, the 71-year-old wife grabbed a pillow and tried to suffocate her husband of 52 years with it. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim with open sores, lacerations, bruising and bite marks.
During an interview with investigators, Bertha’s husband, Memo, reportedly said that his wife attempted to kill him with a pillow after he received a note from his ex-girlfriend he knew 6 decades ago. Prosecutors also said that the 71-year-old wife ‘also admitted to uri-ating on the man.’ According to the court documents, during a court hearing, Bertha’s public defender stated that there was no evidence to suggest the defendant had been trying to kill the victim.
The public defender also pushed for a downgraded charge of domestic battery. But, investigators said footage of at least some of the attack was captured on a phone and the footage appeared to confirm the man’s account of the attack, while prosecutors later alleged that Bertha had admitted to depriving her husband of his cell phone at some point. She also allegedly confessed to committing the attack when interviewed by law enforcement.
