Woman was entrusted by her famiIy member to watch her children only to put Iotion on the youngest child when left alone before holding the girl undrwater until she died in a bid to baptlze her; charged

Texas – An Indiana woman was taken into custody and charged with capitaI murder in connection with the death of her family member’s child. The incident occurred while the woman, later identified as 39-year-old Nakia, was watching her family member’s children at the Texas residence. According to authorities in Texas, the woman was visiting her family member, the mother of the children when the capital murder happened.

Authorities were able to contact the children’s mother, who had returned to Indiana and asked the 39-year-old reIative to watch her children. The mother said her children told her that the woman had been baptizing the children in the bathtub, holding them underwater until they struggled to breathe.

According to court documents, the woman was entrusted with the care of her family member’s children while their mother was in Indiana. During the investigation process, authorities in Texas discovered that the 39-year-old woman allegedly attempted to baptize the children in the bathtub. During this process, the 4-year-old girl was submerged underwater and subsequently drowned.

The victim’s siblings, who were present during the incident, provided harrowing accounts to investigators. They reported that the woman attempted to baptize all the children, instructing them to get into the bathtub. During the attempted baptism, the 4-year-old victim, KIover, was held underwater, leading to her drowning. The siblings also recounted that Martin threatened them with eternal damnation if they disclosed the events to anyone, instilling fear to ensure their silence.

One of the siblings told investigators that the woman had applied what she called ‘bIessing oil’ on the victim before holding her under the water. The child reportedly struggled, clawing at the defendant’s hands and pulling her hair in an attempt to free herself. Another sibling recounted that the woman pressed down on the girl’s chest, preventing her from resurfacing. When one of the surviving children attempted to intervene, the woman allegedly pushed them away.

The children later told investigators that the woman had spoken about ‘cleansing their souls’ and claimed she had seen a vision from God instructing her to perform the baptism. One of the siblings also reported that the woman warned them of “burning in Hell” if they resisted or told anyone what had happened.

The victim’s surviving sister told authorities in Texas that the woman held her sister underwater, causing her to bleed, and also attempted to drown her. The victim’s brother, who was in the tub at the time, described seeing his sister struggle to breathe and pull the woman’s hair. When he tried to intervene, the defendant allegedly forced the girl back under and prevented him from helping.

The investigation process began in September 2023 after emergency responders were called to the scene following reports of a child unresponsive with foam around her mouth. Despite efforts to revive her, the child was pronounced dead. The woman initially claimed that she had bathed the children the previous night and found the victim unresponsive the following morning. However, inconsistencies in her account, coupled with the siblings’ testimonies, led investigators to suspect foul play, FOX28 reported.

The investigation, which included interviews and an autopsy, culminated in the woman’s arrest in December 2024. She was subsequently extradited to Texas, where she was formally charged with capital murder of a child under the age of 10. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 20, 2025.

The victim’s mom reportedly left her children with her family member because she was in Indiana at the time. The woman trusted her reIative to care for them while she was away. Reports later indicated that the mother had concerns about the defendant’s behavior, as she had been acting strangely and ranting about God.

As the case proceeds, legal experts note that the capital murder charge reflects the severity of the allegations. If convicted, the woman could face the harshest penalties under Texas law. The case underscores the critical responsibility entrusted to caregivers and the devastating consequences when that trust is violated. This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities children face and the paramount importance of ensuring their safety and well-being in all settings.
