Texas Agriculture Commissioner Miller backs official state steak designation, highlights ranchers’ role

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Miller announces schools to celebrate National School Breakfast Week March 3-7 with theme ‘Clue In To School Breakfast’

Waco, TX – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has voiced strong support for the Texas Legislature’s ongoing debate over selecting an official state steak.

In a statement issued on March 28, 2025, Miller endorsed Senate Concurrent Resolution 26 (SCR 26) and House Concurrent Resolution 101 (HCR 101), which aim to establish a signature steak cut representing Texas’ dominance in beef production.

“Texas leads the nation in beef production, generating billions for our economy and putting the best steaks on dinner plates across America,” Miller stated. “It’s about time we had a signature Texas cut to match.”

Miller emphasized that an official Texas steak cut would not only celebrate the state’s cattle industry but also solidify Texas’ standing as a global leader in beef production. He pledged that the Texas Department of Agriculture would actively promote the designated cut both domestically and internationally.

The commissioner pointed to two possible contenders for the designation: renaming the New York strip as the “Texas strip” or selecting the tomahawk ribeye as the state’s signature steak. However, Miller insisted that the chosen cut must come exclusively from Texas ranchers, stressing the importance of recognizing their contributions.

“Given challenges like drought, natural disasters, trade disruptions, and economic uncertainty, our ranchers need more than just a pat on the back,” Miller said. “This is more than branding a steak; it’s about standing with the men and women who keep Texas fed, fueled, and thriving.”

The debate over an official state steak comes as part of a broader effort to highlight the significance of Texas’ agriculture industry. The resolutions are currently under consideration in the Legislature, with support from lawmakers aiming to formalize a decision.
