Texas agriculture officials warn of surge in unsolicited seed packages

Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture are warning residents about a sharp increase in unsolicited packages containing unidentified seeds being delivered across the state.

Officials said the department has collected more than 120 seed packets so far this year, with reports increasing significantly since an alert issued earlier this month. The packages raise concerns about potential invasive species, pests, or plant diseases that could threaten Texas agriculture, natural resources, and food security.

The issue mirrors a nationwide wave of so-called “mystery seeds” first reported in 2020, some of which were linked to brushing scams. State and federal agencies are now working together to investigate the source of the shipments, test the contents, and ensure safe disposal.

Residents who receive unsolicited seeds are urged not to open or plant them, to keep the packaging sealed, and to contact the Texas Department of Agriculture for proper handling and collection instructions.
