Houston, TX – The Houston Fire Department is continuing its partnership with Rice University’s D2K Lab to analyze how railroad grade crossings affect emergency response times across the city.
During the D2K Spring Showcase, student researchers presented a capstone project focused on the impact of train-blocked crossings on fire department response. Officials said the research addresses a real-world challenge in Houston, where approximately 700 at-grade railroad crossings can delay emergency vehicles.
Fire department leaders noted that even brief delays at crossings can have significant consequences during emergency calls. The study aims to improve situational awareness and support long-term solutions to reduce response disruptions.
The project was supported by multiple Houston Fire Department personnel and university faculty, reflecting a continued collaboration between public safety officials and academic researchers.
Officials said the partnership highlights the value of combining data analysis with field experience to address operational challenges and improve emergency response efficiency.
