Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed that one person was killed and 10 others were injured in a deadly active shooter incident that unfolded in Midland on June 12, 2026.
Authorities identified the victim as Edward Randall Scott, 62, of Midland. Officials said no additional information would be released at this time.
According to DPS, the incident began around 8:00 a.m. CT in the 4600 block of West Wall Street in Midland, when law enforcement agencies, including the Midland Police Department and multiple local, state, and federal partners, responded to reports of an active shooter.
Preliminary information indicates that upon arrival, the suspect—identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa—opened fire on officers and bystanders. The suspect then barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, prompting a large-scale law enforcement response and perimeter setup.
Authorities said officers contained the scene and engaged in a standoff with the suspect that lasted several hours. At approximately 12:30 p.m. CT, the suspect was located inside the building, deceased. DPS confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Officials also stated that Villarreal had previously been wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after allegedly firing shots at a Midland Police Department officer during a vehicle pursuit on June 10, 2026.
The Texas Rangers are now leading the investigation into the active shooter incident at the request of the Midland Police Department. Authorities emphasized that the case remains active and ongoing, and additional details are being withheld pending further investigation.
Law enforcement officials are urging the public to avoid the area as West Wall Street/Business 20 remains closed from the intersection of Fasken Road to Loop 250. The closure is expected to remain in place for 24 to 48 hours as investigators continue working at the scene.
