On June 16, 2023, hospital staff called the authorities about a possible child abuse. The responding deputies discovered that the 1-year-old child arrived at the local hospital with internal and external injuries. Authorities said the child suffered severe hair loss, sores on her scalp, bruising on her face and other inflicted burns. Doctors also stated that the internal injuries of the child included: bleeding skull fracture, retinal hemorrhages, spinal fractures, rib fractures and a liver laceration.
Doctors also told investigators that the injuries were inflicted, rather than by accident. During an interview with investigators, the 27-year-old mom reportedly said that she picked up one of her daughters from her mother and went to sleep. When the 1-year-old victim woke up, she started to cry, the mother told investigators. Shortly after, when the mother was driving to work with the victim in the backseat, the child reportedly began screaming and then passed out, the 27-year-old woman told investigators. The mother also said that she had no idea about her daughter’s injuries, WDPE reported.
She also said that her children were only in her care or in the care of her mother for the previous 10 days. She also told investigators that her children were not around her boyfriend, Dylan, for at least 10 days. Susan’s mom also could not provide an explanation for the victim’s injuries. But, authorities said that Susan was at Dylan’s house most of the day and overnight on June 15, as well as on the morning of June 16. Susan and her daughter were both at Dylan’s home for at least an hour before the girl was taken to the hospital.
