Texas – Sen. Ted Cruz has described the 2026 midterm elections as a “blue tsunami” and a “Watergate-level repudiation” of the Republican Party, acknowledging that Democrats’ sweeping victories exposed serious weaknesses within the GOP and warning that Republicans must rebuild after losing control of both chambers of Congress and suffering historic defeats in Texas.

In a lengthy statement posted on X on November 5, Cruz said the election results represented one of the most consequential political defeats in modern American history, arguing that Republicans had failed to understand the economic frustrations driving voters away from the party.

“2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an ass kicking. It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate-level repudiation,” Cruz wrote.

The Texas senator said the outcome was particularly concerning because Republican voters had turned out, but many ultimately rejected GOP candidates and supported Democrats instead.

Republicans lost control of the House and Senate, with Cruz estimating that the party would ultimately lose between eight and 10 Senate seats. He also pointed to defeats in traditionally Republican states, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas and Iowa, as well as losses in competitive states such as Michigan, New Hampshire and Georgia.

The results were especially damaging in Texas, where Democrats won every statewide race, marking a dramatic political shift in a state that Republicans have dominated for decades.

Cruz acknowledged that Texas had effectively turned blue, pointing out that the state had not elected a Democratic governor since 1994 or a Democratic U.S. senator since 1993.

“Texas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter. But Texas, today at least, is blue,” he wrote, adding that he was now the only statewide elected Republican remaining in the state.

The Washington Post reported on Cruz’s assessment of the Republican defeat, highlighting his comparison of the results to the political backlash Republicans experienced following the Watergate scandal. The newspaper also noted his criticism of the party’s handling of economic concerns, particularly inflation, tariffs and the prolonged war with Iran.

Cruz argued that the central reason behind the Republican losses was the failure to address the rising cost of living, saying too many politicians focused on positive national economic indicators while overlooking the financial struggles facing ordinary Americans.

He cited the cost of groceries, gasoline, diesel, insurance and housing as major sources of frustration, arguing that voters were increasingly struggling to afford everyday necessities.

As an example, Cruz referenced exit polling in Kansas, where 30.6% of voters identified the cost of living, energy and groceries as their top concern. Corruption ranked second at 18.5%, followed by the cost of the Iran war at 10.1%.

He also criticized the Trump administration’s tariffs, arguing they had made goods more expensive, while the war with Iran had continued longer than it should have.

“The top issue, cost of living, is very real. Too many in politics dismissed it. They didn’t understand,” Cruz wrote.

The Associated Press also reported that economic dissatisfaction played a major role in the Republican defeats, with voters expressing frustration over inflation, higher energy costs and the effects of Trump’s trade policies. Its analysis ahead of the election had warned that tariffs and the Iran war were creating additional economic challenges for Republican candidates.

The Texas results represented another major setback for Republicans. Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race, while Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.

According to the Texas Tribune’s election coverage, Hinojosa’s victory makes her the first Democrat elected governor of Texas since Ann Richards left office in 1995. Talarico’s victory also gives Democrats their first Senate seat in Texas since 1993.

Cruz also pointed to the Republican Party’s declining support among Hispanic voters, younger Americans, blue-collar workers, farmers and ranchers, arguing that the party had alienated several groups that previously formed an important part of its electoral coalition.

An Associated Press analysis published November 6 reported that Hispanic voters shifted significantly toward Democrats during the midterms, helping the party secure major victories in Texas and other competitive races. In Texas, approximately 70% of Hispanic voters supported Talarico, compared with roughly 30% for Paxton, according to the report. Looking ahead, Cruz said Republicans must focus on economic policies that directly improve people’s lives rather than assuming voters will support the party simply because of its political positions.

He also addressed the political consequences of Democrats taking control of Congress, predicting that the new Democratic majority would launch investigations into Trump and his administration while pursuing policies he believes would hurt businesses, energy production and economic growth.

However, Cruz said he would be willing to work with Democrats when their proposals benefit Texas. He revealed that he had already called Talarico to congratulate him on his victory and discuss potential cooperation on issues such as flood relief for the Hill Country and bringing a space academy to Texas.

The senator also promised to oppose Democratic proposals that he believes would raise taxes, restrict the energy industry or undermine constitutional rights.

Despite the scale of the Republican defeat, Cruz ended his statement with a message of optimism, insisting that the party could regain support by returning to its economic principles and reconnecting with working-class voters.

“We will bring Texas back,” Cruz wrote, predicting that the state would eventually return to Republican control.

His remarks come as Republicans face two years of Democratic control in Washington, forcing the party to reassess its political strategy ahead of the next national elections.
