Ellis County Detention Officer Killed in Attack by Inmate

Waco, TX – A tragic incident unfolded Monday afternoon when Ellis County Detention Officer Isaiah Bias, 28, was fatally assaulted by an inmate at the Ellis County Detention Center. The sheriff’s office confirmed the officer’s death Tuesday morning, marking a devastating loss for the community and his colleagues.

Officer Bias had been with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office for several years, beginning his law enforcement career right after high school. Though he briefly left to attend Navarro College, Bias returned to the sheriff’s office, where he had worked diligently to serve the community he grew up in. He had also participated in the Ellis County Sheriff’s Explorers program as a teenager, which provides young people with training and leadership skills for potential careers in law enforcement.

Sheriff Brad Norman identified the inmate responsible for the assault as 45-year-old Arron Semeion Thompson. According to authorities, the attack occurred around 3:45 p.m. Monday while Thompson was being transferred back to his segregated cell after completing his daily one-hour out-of-cell period. At the time of the assault, Thompson was housed in a restricted area of the facility where he spent 23 hours per day in isolation.

Thompson, who has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2002, was in custody on multiple charges, including assault on a public servant and evading arrest. He is now facing additional charges, including capital murder, in connection with Officer Bias’s death.

Sheriff Norman did not provide further details on the specifics of the assault, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident. While the investigation continues, the sheriff expressed his sorrow over the loss of Bias, calling him a dedicated and valued member of the department.

“Isaiah was more than just an officer. He was a committed servant to the community and to his colleagues,” Sheriff Norman said in a statement. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn this tragic loss.”

The fatal attack has sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement community, with many remembering Officer Bias for his dedication to the job and his positive influence on others. Friends and family of Bias have expressed their grief, noting his passion for serving others and his bright future in law enforcement.

The incident highlights the dangers that detention officers face every day. Working in a jail or prison environment comes with inherent risks, and this tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make to protect their communities.

As the investigation progresses, local authorities are focusing on ensuring justice for Officer Bias and his family, as well as determining how to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Funeral arrangements for Officer Bias have not yet been announced. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is receiving an outpouring of support from fellow law enforcement agencies and the community as they cope with the loss of one of their own.
