Texas Department of Public Safety celebrates 90th anniversary with largest Legacy Run

Texas – In celebration of its 90th anniversary, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) held its largest Legacy Run on the morning of August 6, 2025, ahead of the upcoming graduation for Recruit Class A-2025. Nearly 200 DPS personnel, both current and former, joined the recruits for the six-mile run from Camp Mabry, the original home of DPS, to the Texas State Capitol.

Colonel Freeman Martin participated in the run for the first time since becoming Colonel in December 2024. Before the run began, Public Safety Commissioner Larry Long and Colonel Martin addressed the recruit class.

“The Legacy Run is a powerful tradition that represents the determination and commitment of every DPS recruit who accepts the call to serve,” Colonel Martin said.

“This particular run, marking our 90th anniversary, is a reminder that while the department continues to evolve, our core values remain the same. These recruits are not just running toward the finish line — they’re stepping into a legacy of public service that spans generations, and it was a tremendous honor to run alongside them this morning.”

The route took the recruits through the streets of Central Austin, across the University of Texas campus, past the Governor’s Mansion, and ended at the south steps of the Texas Capitol. There, family members gathered to cheer on the recruits as they completed the run.

Recruit Class A-2025 will graduate from the 30-week DPS Training Academy on August 8, 2025, and will report to their respective duty stations across Texas beginning September 1.
