Waco, Texas – Waco Parks and Recreation brought the community together this week as Dewey Community Center hosted a vibrant celebration honoring Hispanic culture through food, games, and festive traditions.
The event welcomed senior program participants alongside youth enrolled in the center’s after-school care program, creating an atmosphere centered on culture, connection, and community engagement. Attendees were treated to a traditional Hispanic meal while participating in activities designed to celebrate and share Hispanic heritage.
One of the highlights of the gathering was Lotería, a beloved traditional game often compared to bingo. Unlike standard bingo, however, the game uses colorful images instead of numbers, adding an interactive and cultural element that participants of all ages enjoyed throughout the celebration.
Children also took part in another well-known tradition by swinging at candy-filled piñatas, bringing excitement and laughter to the community center as families and staff joined in the festivities.
Organizers said the event aimed to provide an opportunity for both seniors and youth to learn about and appreciate Hispanic traditions while strengthening bonds within the local community.
A special acknowledgment was given to Abuelita’s Mexican Restaurant for generously donating meals for the after-school care children and helping make the celebration possible.
The celebration reflected the department’s continued commitment to cultural appreciation, inclusivity, and creating meaningful experiences for residents of all ages in the Waco community.
