Texas – Sid Miller responded sharply after a spokesperson for Greg Abbott pushed back against calls for temporary gas tax relief in Texas.
Miller said Texans are frustrated as fuel prices continue impacting families, farmers, ranchers, truckers, and small businesses across the state. He argued that state leaders should use every available tool to provide financial relief to residents struggling with rising costs.
The agriculture commissioner said Texans have seen Abbott use executive authority in other situations, including emergency declarations and regulatory actions, and questioned why similar authority could not be used to help residents dealing with high fuel prices.
Miller also criticized comments regarding property taxes, saying the state does not collect property taxes and therefore could not suspend them.
He pointed to other states that have enacted gas tax relief measures and referenced Donald Trump expressing support for suspending the federal gas tax.
Miller said he will continue advocating for lower costs and additional relief for Texas families despite opposition from political leaders in Austin.
