Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced the graduation of two new K-9 teams and three certified K-9 Tech Trainers.
These newly trained teams will play a vital role in enhancing narcotics detection and tracking operations across Texas. The K-9 teams, which include breeds like German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, completed a rigorous nine-week training program designed to prepare them for real-world law enforcement situations.
DPS’ K-9 program is one of the nation’s top programs, with 90 total personnel, including 78 handlers across narcotics detection, explosives detection, and tracking. The newly certified K-9 Tech Trainers will oversee essential training processes, ensuring that the K-9 teams are fully prepared for high-pressure situations.
The narcotics detection team, including K-9 Rula, will be crucial in identifying hidden drug caches and disrupting trafficking operations. The tracking team, led by K-9 Zita, will assist in locating missing persons and fugitives, with the ability to track over long distances and through challenging environments.
“These teams are critical in enhancing public safety,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “They help us detect threats, track suspects, and provide essential support for law enforcement across Texas.”
