Texas – Governor Greg Abbott received the Sun and Star Legacy Award on Thursday night during the Japan America Society of DFW Awards Gala, where he highlighted Texas’ growing economic relationship with Japan and the state’s continued focus on international investment and trade.
The award was presented by the Japan America Society of DFW in recognition of Abbott’s leadership and his efforts to strengthen economic and cultural ties between Texas and Japan. Organizers said the honor reflects ongoing collaboration between the state and Japanese business and diplomatic communities.
During his remarks, Abbott said Texas and Japan share “values like hard work, freedom, and innovation,” and emphasized continued cooperation in areas such as advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and energy development. He said these partnerships help both regions address modern economic and industrial challenges while promoting long-term growth.
Abbott also highlighted Texas’ economic performance, noting that the state has been ranked the Best State for Business for 21 consecutive years. He pointed to Texas’ leadership in job creation, economic development, and attracting new business investment as key factors behind its continued growth.
Japan remains one of Texas’ most important international trading partners. According to figures referenced during the event, it is the state’s seventh-largest trading partner, with more than $25.9 billion in annual trade. Over the past decade, Japanese companies have launched more than 140 investment projects in Texas, supporting tens of thousands of jobs across sectors including advanced manufacturing, energy, and life sciences.
The gala brought together business leaders, diplomats, and local officials. Among those in attendance were Plano Mayor John Muns, Toyota executive Tetsu Ogawa, Japan America Society of DFW leaders Grant Ogata and Adam Zehner, Consul General Takeshi Koyama, and Texas Restaurant Association CEO Dr. Emily Knight.
Abbott used the event to reaffirm his commitment to strengthening Texas’ economic ties with Japan, saying continued cooperation will help expand opportunity and innovation for both sides.
