Houston, TX — A 21-year-old woman has been arrested after authorities discovered her two young children left alone in a filthy apartment under shocking conditions. On December 21, law enforcement officials responded to a welfare check at an apartment in Houston, where they found the children, ages three and one, unsupervised in a home covered in trash, bugs, and an overwhelming stench of neglect.
Inside the apartment, officers found exposed medication, a trash can overflowing with used diapers, and other unsanitary conditions that highlighted the unsafe environment the children were left in. Both children were covered in lice and exhibited other signs of neglect, prompting immediate concern from authorities.
More disturbingly, the one-year-old child tested positive for both cocaine and marijuana, raising serious questions about the child’s exposure to dangerous substances.
The children’s mother, Denisse Urias Vargas, was arrested on charges of abandoning a child with intent to return. According to police, the children had been left alone for an unspecified period of time before being discovered. Urias Vargas was given a bond of $1,000 and is facing serious legal consequences in connection with the incident.
The case has drawn widespread concern, with many questioning how such neglect could occur, especially with the added danger of drug exposure. The children have since been placed in protective custody as investigations into the incident continue. Authorities are expected to pursue further charges as new information becomes available.
