Killeen Police investigate fatal shooting of 21-year-old after gunfire reported on 18th Street

Killeen, TX – The Killeen Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that left a 21-year-old man dead following an incident reported Thursday evening in central Killeen.

According to police, officers were dispatched on April 30, 2026, at approximately 5:07 p.m. to the 1100 block of 18th Street after receiving reports of a gunshot victim.

When officers arrived, they located an unconscious male inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency responders transported the victim to Darnall Army Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities said he was pronounced deceased at 5:49 p.m. by Justice of the Peace James.

Police confirmed the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators said preliminary information suggests a gunshot was heard in the area prior to the crash. Witnesses reported seeing the victim’s vehicle strike a fence shortly after the shooting occurred. An unknown male suspect was also seen running from the area on foot, according to initial accounts.

At this stage, investigators have not released a description of the suspect or confirmed a motive. The case is being treated as a homicide investigation.

The Killeen Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, specifically its Robbery-Homicide Unit, is actively leading the investigation. Officials said there is no additional information available at this time as detectives continue gathering evidence and speaking with potential witnesses.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can be submitted to Bell County Crime Stoppers at 254-526-TIPS (8477) or through its online reporting system.

Police emphasized that even small details could assist investigators as they work to identify those responsible and determine what led to the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
