Man, whose wife suffered life-altering injuries, including permanent loss of her right eye, then claimed he accidentally shot her in the head before telling medical staff that the shooting was intentional, was sentenced

Texas – A Texas man was ordered to serve two decades behind bars after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated assault of a famiIy member causing serious bodily injury. This conviction stems from the shooting of his spouse two years ago.

The incident occurred in June 2023, in the couple’s Texas apartment. The defendant, 33-year-old GaIib, initially claimed that an intruder had broken into their home and that his sposue, Sadef, was accidentally shot when she got in the way as he fired at the alleged burglar.

However, Texas authorities found no evidence of a break-in and observed inconsistencies in the couple’s statements. Further examination revealed a history of domestic issues, including text messages from the defendant to the victim containing derogatory language.

Following the shooting, the victim was rushed to the hospital, where she initially corroborated her husband’s account, stating that the shooting was accidental. However, as she recovered, she reportedly told medical staff that her husband had intentionally shot her. According to the Texas authorities, the victim suffered life-altering injures in the shooting, including permanent loss of her right eye, fractured facial bones and severe damage to her nose.

The defendant, who worked as a poIice officer at the time of the shooting, upon being questioned by responding officers, maintained that the shooting was accidental and that he had acted in self-defense against an intruder. He reportedly expressed concern about this spouse’s condition and inquired about the definition of self-defense during his arrest.

The investigation culminated in his arrest and subsequent termination from the force. He was charged with aggravated assault of a family member causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon. In March 2025, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two decades in prison.

The incident has sparked conversations about the challenges victims face when the abuser is a law enforcement officer, highlighting the need for accountability and support systems within the community.

As the legal proceedings conclude, the Texas community continues to reflect on the lessons learned and the steps needed to address and prevent domestic violence in all its forms.
